Make Your Mark

NGV Creative Studio inspired by Joshua Yeldham | Levels 7–12

Mon–Fri, 10 am, 12.30 pm
Levels 7–12
NGV International

Explore patterning, adornment and images of nature, inspired by the themes and mark-making of contemporary artist Joshua Yeldham. This educator-led program begins in the Gallery with students viewing and discussing different ways artists have connected with and responded to the natural world. Then in the studio, students immerse themselves in the intricate and meditative process of mark-making, as they create unique and personalised artworks using a Dremel tool and Posca pens to carve and draw on photographs created by Joshua Yeldham.

Duration: 2 hours
Cost: $22 per student

Students will

    :

  • Discuss how artists have been inspired by, and responded to, the natural environment
  • Identify and discuss the artistic practice and ideas of Joshua Yeldham and consider how these connect with other works in the NGV Collection
  • Adapt ideas, skills and techniques from contemporary art to inform their own artmaking.

About Joshua Yeldham

Working across painting, carved photography, ceramics and sculpture, Joshua Yeldham’s work conflates these various media. His work ranges from characteristic hand-carved paintings with sculptural assemblages on board, to pierced and carved photographs. Yeldham was awarded the Nancy Fairfax Artist Residency in 2017, through which the artist created new works exhibited in association with his retrospective exhibition at Tweed Regional Gallery. He has been an award finalist for the Wynne Prize, Archibald Prize, Sulman Prize and Mosman Art Prize. Yeldham has participated in the London Art Fair, ART15 2015 and represented in the NGV Triennial 2023.
