Write Like an Art Critic

Are you looking to enhance your students’ ability to write more effectively about art to support their visual arts studies? This educator-led program uses works from the NGV Collection to enhance students’ descriptive, analytical, interpretive and writing skills. Students will learn how to incorporate formal and critical analysis and critical, cultural and personal perspectives into their writing through guided discussions and practical activities. Students will develop strategies for crafting clear, descriptive, and analytical texts that effectively communicate their ideas about art.

Students will:

  • Describe, analyse and interpret works of art from different cultural, historical and contemporary contexts
  • Learn to craft clear, descriptive, and analytical texts that effectively communicate their insights and ideas about art incorporating the elements and principles
  • Gain practical strategies for structuring and writing compelling art analysis and interpretation, incorporating key elements of effective writing such as clarity, precision, and critical thought

Duration: 1 hour
Cost: $10.50 per student

Booking Form 

    We require four weeks notice for all bookings.

    Changes to your booking must be made in writing. Changes can be made up to 14 days prior to your visit. Invoices will be sent prior to the visit. Full program fees will be incurred for late cancellations or amendments.

    Please note: the National Gallery of Victoria has two locations. NGV International holds our Collection of works from around the world, and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia is home to our Collection of Australian art. When submitting your booking request, please indicate which location you would like to visit.

    Study Focus

    Please provide details of any relevant themes and skills your students are learning about at school. While we cannot offer individually tailored programs, our museum educators will consider this information when selecting and discussing works of art during the program.

    Date Selection

    We recommend you provide three date options for your program to avoid disappointment. We will do our best to accommodate your first preference, however due to high demand this may not always be possible.

    Terms and Conditions

    We do not take tentative bookings. Bookings are considered firm at time of booking. Any amendments, including changes to participant numbers, must be made by email at least 14 days prior to the program. Invoices will be sent prior to the visit. Full program fees will be incurred for late cancellations or amendments. Payment must be paid at least one week prior to the visit.
