What is Art? | Critical and Creative Thinking

Thinking caps on! Inspire creative and critical thinking in this fun and challenging NGV educator-led program. Students will explore a range of thought-provoking works in the NGV Collection, and examine some of the big questions in art such as how we define and value art. Students will participate in guided discussion employing a range of strategies including Artful Thinking Routines.

This program will be tailored to the level of the students.

Students will:

  • Question and investigate art and design from different cultural, historical and contemporary contexts using Artful Thinking strategies and tools.
  • Consider and respond to philosophical questions and big ideas about art.
  • Listen and respond to comments and views of others thoughtfully and constructively

Duration: 1 hour
Cost: $10.50 per student

    We require four weeks notice for all bookings.

    Changes to your booking must be made in writing. Changes can be made up to 14 days prior to your visit. Invoices will be sent prior to the visit. Full program fees will be incurred for late cancellations or amendments.

    Please note: the National Gallery of Victoria has two locations. NGV International holds our Collection of works from around the world, and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia is home to our Collection of Australian art. When submitting your booking request, please indicate which location you would like to visit.

    Study Focus

    Please provide details of any relevant themes and skills your students are learning about at school. While we cannot offer individually tailored programs, our museum educators will consider this information when selecting and discussing works of art during the program.

    Date Selection

    We recommend you provide three date options for your program to avoid disappointment. We will do our best to accommodate your first preference, however due to high demand this may not always be possible.

    Terms and Conditions

    We do not take tentative bookings. Bookings are considered firm at time of booking. Any amendments, including changes to participant numbers, must be made by email at least 14 days prior to the program. Invoices will be sent prior to the visit. Full program fees will be incurred for late cancellations or amendments. Payment must be paid at least one week prior to the visit.
