Bark Ladies is an exhibition that celebrates the NGV’s extraordinary collection of work by Yolngu women artists from Yirrkala, in Northeast Arnhem Land. With a wide variety of works featuring mermaids, crocodiles, starlit skies and rivers, ancestral fires, and even a scene from the floor of Parliament in Canberra, Bark Ladies showcases how each of these eleven artists depict their unique stories in bold and unexpected ways. Please note this session will be open to multiple schools. A private session can be booked for your school for $150.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the traditions of bark painting and larrakitj in Yolgnu art and culture
- Compare and contrast the materials, techniques and subject matter of individual artists in Bark Ladies
- Discuss the relationship between cultural stories and identity through artworks in the exhibition
