Sophisticated and quirky, an exclusive jewellery collection by leading Japanese jewellery gallery and retail space, Gallery Deux Poissons is now available at the NGV design store.
The collection includes a range of necklaces and brooches by six Japanese artists and jewellery practitioners represented by Gallery Deux Poissons. Pieces from the collection embrace elements of Japanese minimalism as well as contemporary reinterpretations of popular culture and kawaii themes, including farm animals, UFOs and flowers.
Hidden within Tokyo’s fashionable neighbourhood of Ebisu, Gallery Deux Poissons is a design destination featuring works by emerging and conceptual Japanese jewellery artists. The gallery is renowned for its contemporary design aesthetic and philosophy that uses unconventional jewellery materials including ribbon, acrylic, silk and wood.
Highlights from the NGV design store range include a minimalist adaptation of the traditional pearl necklace crafted from Swarovski crystal pearls, by designer Naoko Ogawa. Through the alternating placement of pearls and silk cord, these delicate necklaces suggest that the pearls are floating around the wearer’s neck.
The collection also includes a menagerie of animal-inspired ribbon brooches, created by designer Baku Maeda, one-half of design duo Ribbonesia. Ribbonesia is known for their innovative shaping and twisting of ribbon to create 3D sculptural forms that reference traditional Japanese origami.
Further highlights include the one-off, floral-inspired brooches, designed by Gallery Deux Poissons artist Jung Jung. Each hand-made piece is completely unique and has been constructed using an elaborate crochet-knit technique, depicting bouquets of violets and hydrangeas.
The Gallery Deux Poissons collection is the latest in a series of exclusive jewellery initiatives by the NGV design store, with previous contemporary jewellery galleries featured including Galerie Ra, Amsterdam and Gallery O, Seoul.
The display and collection of the Gallery Deux Poissons jewellery is part of the ongoing contemporary jewellery retail initiative at the NGV design store. The specialised retail pop-up display has been conceptually curated by the NGV design store in collaboration with NGV’s Contemporary Design and Architecture Department.
The collection is now available at the NGV design store, located at NGV International, 180 St Kilda Rd, Melbourne.
