NGV Kids on Tour 2022: 120+ regional and metropolitan galleries, libraries and community centres across Victoria to host FREE activities

Various locations and venues | January 2022 | FREE

15 December 2021: NGV Kids on Tour returns in 2022 to over 120 venues across regional and metropolitan Victoria to offer FREE artist designed activities, games and workshops easily accessible to families in their local communities.   With over 120 venues participating the NGV Kids on Tour 2022 program will reach more families than ever before.

Inspired by the theme ‘Art for the whole family’ and the NGV Kids exhibition The Gecko and the Mermaid: Djerrkŋu Yunupiŋu and Her Sister, opening at NGV International on 17 December, and coinciding with the annual NGV Kids Summer Festival, held at NGV International 15 – 23 January 2022, the expansive NGV Kids on Tour 2022 program includes:

  • We Are Mermaids with Djerrkŋu Yunupiŋu – In this arts and craft activity children will take inspiration from the mermaid story depicted in the bark paintings of Djerrkŋu Yunupiŋu, a contemporary Yolŋu artist from Yirrkala, North-East Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory whose work is the subject of the NGV Kids exhibition The Gecko and the Mermaid: Djerrkŋu Yunupiŋu and Her Sister. The activity encourages young artists to draw a self-portrait of themselves as a mermaid and create a three-dimensional diorama of an ocean-inspired world where a mermaid would live.
  • Story time with 1, 2, 3 Geckos and Turtles: A Counting Book for KidsVenues will host story time sessions for children aged 1 – 6 years old with readings of 1, 2, 3 Geckos and Turtles: A Counting Book for Kids written by Yolŋu artist Ms. N Yunupiŋu and her granddaughter Siena Mayutu Wurmarri Stubbs and published in conjunction with The Gecko and the Mermaid: Djerrkŋu Yunupiŋu and Her Sister. The book will take young readers on a counting adventure to Arnhem Land, spotting animals on Country and learning Yolŋu Matha, the language of the Yolŋu people.
  • Collecting Maypal Board Game with Siena Mayutu Wurmarri Stubbs – Young Yolŋu artist, Siena Mayutu Wurmarri Stubbs, of the Gumatj clan of the Yirritja moiety, has collaborated with the NGV to create a board game inspired by her childhood memories of hunting shellfish, known as maypal in Yolŋu Matha. Children will play a collecting game introducing them to different kinds of maypal and where they live offering an opportunity to learn about Yolŋu culture.
  • Noisy Birds! Dhawuḻuŋguḻ Ŋutu’ Wäyin Malanynha with Siena Mayutu Wurmarri Stubbs – In this guessing and drawing game titled ‘Who am I?’, created by Siena Mayutu Wurmarri Stubbs, children will discover Stubbs’ favourite birds from Arnhem Land and learn their names in Yolŋu Matha.
  • Paper Jewels – Drawing inspiration from the ornate jewellery found on display at the NGV this activity will show families how to create paper necklaces and bracelets using craft materials and adorn them with imagery from jewellery and accessories in the NGV Collection.
  • NGV Teens – Styling a Look with Aurie Indianna – Melbourne-based fashion stylist and creative director Aurie Indianna has created an activity sheet for teens to learn about becoming a stylist, working behind the scenes of a photo shoot and styling celebrities.
  • NGV Teens – Shooting in the Dark with Tom Blachford – Melbourne-based photographer Tom Blachford has designed a how to guide for photography enthusiasts to learn his techniques for composing a photograph and transforming an image from day to night using easily accessible apps on a smartphone.
