NGV NEWS | Art Party for teens returns in 2017

Teens will be immersed in the dreamy pop and magnetic beats of Melbourne based musician and DJ Sui Zhen when she headlines Art Party for teens at NGV International, Saturday 28 January 2017 from 6pm – 10pm. Art Party will offer after-hours access to summer blockbuster exhibitions David Hockney: Current and Viktor&Rolf: Fashion Artists, as well as stand-up comedy, interactive dance performances, and creative activities including masquerade mask making.

Ethan Cavanagh, finalist from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Class Clown competition, will feature as MC entertaining the crowd with lively stand-up comedy routines as well as running NGV design store giveaways throughout the night.

Live entertainment will continue to feature throughout the evening with performances from Left Leg Studios, with the dance troupe taking direction from NGV summer exhibitions to create a bespoke dance routine for the evening. A DJ set will keep the party going well into the evening, filling the Great Hall with upbeat, rhythmic, and popular tunes.

Drawing creative direction from the avant-garde designs of Viktor&Rolf, teens can make dynamic and mysterious masquerade masks using metallic and pastel materials with artist and esteemed craft maker Kitiya Palaskas. Once decorated with their ornate masks, Art Party guests can spend the night dancing away in their new accessory and strike a pose in front of the specially constructed media wall.

The NGV Garden will remain open for guests to explore the ‘hot pink car wash’ that was unveiled as the 2016 Architecture Commission, with the structure’s mist feature adding to the atmosphere and keeping teens cool. The new virtual reality program If Only… will be running through the night where teens can explore the world of design and create a new virtual environment inside the 2016 Architecture Commission.

Art Party guests can keep their energy levels up and feed their appetite with pop-up catering including donuts, sushi platters, hot dogs and authentic Italian gelato from the Pidapipo Gelateria food stall.

Tony Ellwood, Director, NGV, said, ‘Since launching in 2015, Art Party has become a highlight on the NGV calendar for teens. The event offers young art enthusiasts a chance to connect with creativity through an interactive and curated program of events.’

Art Party is at NGV International on Saturday 28 January 6pm – 10pm. Tickets on sale from ngv.vic.gov.au. Student $15 | Member $12

The NGV wishes to acknowledge the Ullmer Family Foundation and the Truby & Florence Williams Charitable Trust for their generous support of NGV Teens.
