NGV Women’s Association Garden Day

On Thursday 17 October, the NGV Women’s Association (NGVWA) will hold its annual Garden Day event. For over 20 years, this highly anticipated event has offered visitors a glimpse into some of Melbourne’s most inspiring and rarely seen private gardens.

This year there are seven of Melbourne’s finest gardens in Toorak, Armadale and South Yarra to enjoy along with stalls of delicious homemade produce and beautifully handmade craft items available for purchase.

Maria Smith, Vice President of the NGV Women’s Association said: “The Garden Day is the highlight of a successful year of fundraising events held by the NGVWA during 2013, as part of our continued pledge to raise funds to assist the NGV with important acquisitions and art scholarship.”

“The Association has been able to add many significant artworks to the NGV Collection including works by well-known artists Andy Warhol, Anish Kapoor, Christopher Dresser and Peter Booth and in 2013 we look forward to supporting the acquisition of The Young Mother, the beautiful painting by John Longstaff,” said Mrs Smith.

Tony Ellwood, Director, NGV said that the support and contribution that the NGVWA has made since it was established in 1961 is enormous. Through the generosity of its members it has enabled the Gallery to acquire many important works and pursue scholarly projects that will be enjoyed by generations to come.

The purpose of the NGVWA is to support the interests of the NGV through fundraising for works of art for the NGV Collection and though curatorial and student travel scholarships.
