Unplugged Live

The intimate performance and conversation program Unplugged Live, featuring some of Australia’s leading musicians, songwriters and contemporary artists returns to The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia from July.

Featured musicians include ARIA Award-winning artist Megan Washington; a solo set from Alex Gow, front man of the young indie rock band Oh Mercy; and Little Birdy’s Katy Steele, who is currently working on a new solo album.

The series also includes multi-instrumentalist Olympia (Olivia Bartley); Big Scary’s Tom Iansek, who debuted his solo project #1 Dads at the 2015 Sydney Festival in January, and launches with a NAIDOC Week focus featuring young Indigenous Australian singer Thelma Plum (who already has triple j Unearthed, NIMA and Deadly awards under her belt).

Tony Ellwood, Director, NGV said, ‘Unplugged Live is a platform for celebrating the creative intersections between art-making and music. It is a chance to explore and interact with our current exhibitions in a different way and is one of the highlights of our evolving focus on art and music in the gallery.’

Curated and hosted by Jae Laffer of The Panics, Unplugged Live will showcase these six outstanding emerging and established musicians over six weeks through a conversation and short live performance.

Also joining Jae in conversation will be contemporary artists featured in current NGV exhibitions including: Indigenous Art: Moving backwards into the future, The Kaleidoscopic Turn and Follow the Flag: Australian Artists at War 1914-1945.

‘Each week, a different contemporary artist and I will unlock the inspiration behind their works on display, followed by a conversation and short live acoustic performance with a musician, all set within the gallery space. I want to reveal some of the fascinating links we can make between songwriting and art-making as creative practices,’ Jae Laffer said.

Featured contemporary visual artists will be announced soon.

Unplugged Live will be held at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Sundays 2-3pm from 5 July – 9 August. Entry is free. #ngvunplugged
