Born 1944; arrived in Australia 1986–87; lives and works in Melbourne. Leon van Schaik is Professor of Architecture with an Innovation Chair in Design Practice Research at RMIT University. In 2003 he was made a Life Fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, and an Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2006. Curatorial projects include Ruins of the Future, Adelaide Festival, 1996; Australia’s representation in the 7th International Exhibition of Architecture, Venice Biennale, 2000; and Melbourne Masters Architecture, TarraWarra Museum of Art, Healesville, 2004. He has authored numerous publications, including Mastering Architecture (2005); Design City Melbourne (2006); and Spatial Intelligence: New Futures for Architecture (2008).
