Established and led by Mel Bright, this emerging practice has already gathered a collection of built work that displays a striking conversation with Melbourne architectural heritage. With their work predominantly in residential builds, alterations and extensions, the careful and strategic understanding of occupational use is complimented by an intrinsic interest in material specificity framed by a wider concern for urban scale and domesticity. Nowhere is this more evident than in their recent Little Brick Studio.

Artist statement:
MAKE Architecture’s work for the incubator space responds to the two themes: ‘stitching the city’ and ‘materiality and craftsmanship’. The chosen themes have been the starting point for the exploration of multiple built and unbuilt projects.
‘Stitching the city’ is about the larger scale of the city and suburb and explores the engagement between MAKE’s projects and the local context. Studies of street elevations, inspired by Ed Ruscha’s photographic study of the Sunset Strip, locate the projects within their context and sectional models show the formal engagement at a closer scale.
‘Materiality and craftsmanship’ is explored through 1:5 scale detailed, texture models that demonstrate the variety of material testing that takes place at MAKE. Pattern and texture are explored through brick, timber and roof tile models, with all ceramics hand made for the installation.
The inclusion of the ‘MAKE something’ shelf, invites visitors to the gallery to engage and interact with the actual materials and make their own textures and patterns.
