Born 1973, Adelaide, South Australia; lives and works in Melbourne. After an early career in economics, Sam Leach began studying painting in 1998 at RMIT University, where he completed a Master of Fine Art and is currently undertaking a PhD. He has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally in group shows including First Life Residency in Landscape, Xin Dong Cheng Space for Contemporary Art, Beijing, China, and Together in Harmony, Korean Foundation Cultural Centre, Seoul, South Korea, both 2011; and Lie of the Land: New Australian Landscapes, Embassy of Australia, Washington D. C., 2012. He held a solo show, Platonia, with COMODAA in London, 2010. Leach has won several prizes, including the Archibald Prize and the Wynne Prize in 2010. In 2011–12 an exhibition of his art was held at the TarraWarra Museum of Art, Healesville.
