Rory Hyde’s architectural practice encompasses design, research and building and also broadcasting – Hyde is co-host of The Architects on Triple R radio and will shortly take up a position as architecture curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. His commission for Federation Court at the NGV International provides a space for social encounters, events, performances and broadcasts. Its form, comprising a geodesic dome, constructed from plastic office waste paper bins, with accompanying weather balloon, is partly in reference to a work made in 1966 by Roy Grounds, the modernist architect who designed the NGV International, along with a range of related utopian architectural precedents such as Buckminster Fuller and Cedric Price.
