Born in Footscray, Reko Rennie received no formal artistic training but as a teenager discovered graffiti, a medium that enabled him to express his Kamilaroi identity. For Melbourne Now he is contributing Regalia, three shocking pink emblems of rebellion, and Initiation, a mural-scale, multi-panel hoarding that subverts the negative stereotyping of Indigenous people living in cities. Combining native flora and fauna, street art, Kamilaroi diamond geometry and text, Initiation is a powerful spectacle of resistance.
