Informed by his Arabic heritage and interest in architecture, Raafat Ishak’s recent works also explore the motif of a black cube, recalling associations with Malevich’s iconic Black Square paintings and Mecca’s Kaaba. Here, Ishak’s finely detailed and formally abstracted paintings of the interior of the NGV are further modified through the artist’s insertion of a featureless black cube.
