Born in Mildura, Gayle Maddigan is a descendent of four Victorian Indigenous tribes: Dhudhuroa, Nari Nari, Wamba Wamba and Wegaia. Her conceptual drawings lament the desecration of Aboriginal sacred sites and the genocide of Victorian tribes. Markings that encode the song-lines and ancestral narratives of her Country are set against drawings of animal forms, which morph between different states of being. The brooding fields of black negative space, which resonate with ineffable sadness and loss.
