Michelle Hamer is an architect turned textile artist whose small-scale needlepoint tapestries reference text and signage from the local urban environment. Appropriating roads signs, graffiti, billboards and advertising, Hamer’s interest is in language and meaning. Her tapestries offer up a kind of social cartography that mixes depictions of specific locales with enigmatic and dislocated narratives. Here, works referencing local signage are juxtaposed with earlier tapestries from an American series.
