Founded in 1998, Slave Pianos is a collective of artists, composers and musicians with members Rohan Drape, Neil Kelly, Danius Kesminas, Michael Stevenson and Dave Nelson that work across installation and performance. Their project Gamelan sisters incorporates a self-governing electromechanical ‘slave’ gamelan, a traditional musical ensemble from Indonesia incorporating a variety of instruments. Using a wall-mounted console, audience members can select pieces from Slave Pianos’s repertoire for the gamelan to play.
