Working across photography, collage, sculpture and installation, Tony Garifalakis’s artworks question the authority and veracity of political, social, religious and artistic institutions. Mutually Assured Destruction comprises collages that juxtapose loaded political and corporate imagery with cute and benign clip art. The works also mine denim’s rich cultural connotations and reveal it as a material paradox: a signifier of sub-cultures like gangs and outlaws it is also crucial to the lucrative global fashion industry.
