Richard Lewer’s multidisciplinary practice is customarily directed to exploring themes around sport, crime and religion in a vision that is sometimes dark and menacing, sometimes inquisitive and gentle. Since challenging fellow artist Luke Sinclair to a boxing match at Melbourne’s Northside Boxing in 2001 (as a performance), Lewer has continued an interest – both personal and artistic – in boxing. His immersive recreation of the Northside gymnasium features a charcoal wall drawing, audio installation, mirrors and sweaty boxing bag.
