Douglas McManus is an experimental textile artist. His sculptural work Permanent extraction uses laser cutting, engraving, perforation and thermo-moulding techniques and includes a heart and lungs that have been decoratively rendered in a pattern derived from the acanthus leaf. Incorporating fibre optics, mono filament and fluoro neon tubing, the organs are programmed to react to sound – the work glows and rises and subsides as if breathing. The title refers to the permanent loss of chemical receptors associated with degenerative neurological conditions.
