Summer in Australia is all about the backyard. It is the place of ad-hoc cricket games, relaxed barbeques and abundant gardens. This summer, as part of Melbourne Now, the garden spaces of NGV International are being transformed into the backyard of Melbourne.
The NGV has been collaborating with award winning design consultancy Urban Commons to transform the backyard into an immersive sensory garden. Over the summer you are invited to plant and tend to an urban kitchen garden before the final big harvest at the close of Melbourne Now. In addition Urban Commons is creating a sprawling Wayward Forest that sees a native food forest emerge from planter bags made from recycled vinyl billboards.
Nestled between the trees you will find the Melbourne Now Design Residency housed in a Bolwell EDGE RV caravan. Here leading designers will be transforming the caravan into their working studio from Thursday to Sunday each week. Sit with them, watch them work or have a chat as they develop new design projects for Melbourne.
Then, as summer really heats up, the backyard transforms into the ultimate NGV Summer Sunday Session. With DJ’s, Melbourne Now artists and great food every Sunday in February the NGV backyard becomes the perfect place to relax and explore some of Melbourne’s most innovative sculptural works by Caleb Shea, Louise Paramor and Cameron Robbins.
Start exploring the garden over the opening weekend of Melbourne Now and watch it blossom over the Summer.
We are delighted that the NGV Garden is supported by Spotlight Charitable Foundation.
