For the first time, the NGV in collaboration with La Trobe University, the Learning Partner for Melbourne Now, will offer a Summer School subject in February 2014 – Melbourne Now: A Study of a City’s Contemporary Arts.
Centred on the exhibition Melbourne Now and the 400+ contributors, the NGV and La Trobe University Summer School is a great way to gain credit points towards your studies. Or you can participate in the course as a member of the public and just immerse yourself in the exhibition while being part of an incredible event in Melbourne’s cultural and social history.
Over the last two months NGV Education and the Melbourne Now curatorial team have been meeting with staff from La Trobe University to look at the trends and innovations in current creative practices in the visual arts, design, architecture, fashion, film, sound and dance, to develop an exciting summer program that will give you the opportunity to explore, engage with and respond to contemporary thinking, ideas, and challenges. Through a dynamic program of artist and designer talks, interpretation and writing workshops and exhibition viewings the Summer School will offer a unique program of engagement with leading thinkers and creative practitioners in our community.
We have been working closely with Neil Fettling, Director of the La Trobe Art Institute and Vincent Alessi, Director of La Trobe University Museum of Art, to bring together the key themes of the exhibition and integrate this into the study requirements for an elective unit.
The incredible range of artists and designers the exhibition showcases combined with insights to contemporary ideas and thinking together with the breadth of expertise informing this course is creating such an impressive program that we want to enrol!
We’ll be posting more details on the NGV Blog in coming weeks so stay tuned. To express your interest in the course and receive an enrolment pack click here.
