Melbourne Now Design Residency: Bolwell EDGE Caravan Studio

Residency #3 Erika Zorzi and Matteo Sangalli of Mathery Studio

Designers Erika Zorzi and Matteo Sangalli of Mathery Studio left Italy little more than one year ago, arriving in Australia they spent the first 7 months travelling around the country in a campervan. Tiring of their nomadic lifestyle, they were eager to settle in a place where they could establish their Australian based multidisciplinary studio. Choosing Melbourne for its vibrant creative design community, Erika and Matteo have garnered local attention for novel product designs, video and photography projects. Taking part in the Melbourne Now Design Residency Erica and Matteo occupied the Bolwell EDGE Caravan in the Garden at NGV International from 12 – 15 December. Turning the EDGE into a showroom for their ongoing project Fruit Ninja, Mathery Studio demonstrated the process behind their latest work – an oversized ‘punch’ / serving bowl cast from pineapple peel and made in colored resin. Now available in the NGV Shop along with the entire Fruit Ninja tableware collection (inspired by avocado, orange and banana peel), Erika and Matteo said: ‘we see Melbourne as an innovative and fascinating environment to work in, and we are glad to say that we feel like we’re a part of an exciting design community.’
