Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts is founded in Paris and is considered the first Secessionist movement. February Monet, Seurat, Pissarro, Gauguin and Rodin appear as guest artists at the annual exhibition held by the group Les XX in Brussels. A long article on Monet appears in the March 3 edition of Gil Blas, in which Monet reports his “chief artistic concern is the ‘envelope’ of pulsating, coloured light, more than the solid physical facts of landscape”.
