On 5 February Monet buys 1,268 square metres of marshy land at the bottom of his property. In March Monet begins the process of seeking planning permission for his envisaged water garden which incorporates diverting the Ru, a tributary of the Epte. He meets stiff opposition from neighbours, yet permission is granted in July. By late 1893 a Japanese-style bridge is constructed over the pond. Monet befriends the director of the Rouen Botanical Gardens, who henceforth assists his gardening projects.
