1977

At the death of Jacques Carlu, the Académie des Beaux-Arts requests another academician, Gerald van der Kemp, who had restored Versailles and the Trianon, to resurrect Monet’s property at Giverny. Van der Kemp raises money from French and American philanthropists for conservation projects and attracts specialised botanists to advise on the garden. American Ambassador and collector of Monet, Walter Annenberg funds a tunnel to be built under the road separating Monet’s house and upper garden from the water garden.
