Poor sales propel the painters to revisit old ideas for exhibiting their art independently of the Salon system. Monet helps found the ‘Anonymous Association of Painters, Sculptors, and Engravers', which stages its first exhibition in April 1874 in the showroom of the photographer Nadar in central Paris. Monet shows five paintings at what becomes known as the 1st of 8 Impressionist Exhibitions.
