“Oh mother, it is mastered, it is beautiful”. James McNeill Whistler’s painting: Portrait of the artist’s mother, 1871, is one of a handful of paintings that are universally known and admired. In this short documentary Dr Isobel Crombie, NGV’s Assistant Director, explores how and why this work came to be recognised as an icon.
