Portrait of a young woman, after Cranach the Younger, II is Picasso’s interpretation of a painting by Renaissance artist Lucas Cranach the Younger. The extraordinary five-colour print was Picasso’s first published linocut, made when the artist was seventy-seven years old. Continually pushing the expressive and technical possibilities of each medium he investigated, here Picasso exploited the linocut’s potential for rich colours, created by layers of oily ink, and decorative abstraction of form.
