Venetian glass became famous throughout the Mediterranean world from the thirteenth century onwards for its remarkable colour and clarity, elaborate design and skilful manufacture.
Cobalt blue pigment and indigo blue dye are two of the most distinctive and influential colourants employed by artists worldwide.
In the fifteenth century, the art, architecture, literature and science of ancient Greece and Rome were rediscovered, and inspired the complex and extraordinary cultural phenomenon that was Renaissance art. As ancient sculptures were unearthed in Italy, artists copied them in marble, in paint and on paper. At the same time, they revolutionised figure drawing by studying the anatomy and movement of bodies, and rendering them with unprecedented accuracy. The NGV’s Old Master paintings, drawings and prints in this exhibition show the diversity of approaches to the figure in art, including works by Albrecht Dürer, Annibale Carracci and Peter Paul Rubens.
A collaboration between the NGV and Warrnambool Art Gallery. The holdings of Italian art in the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid are unique and unrivalled in museums outside Italy. Drawn from its magnificent collection, this exhibition of over 70 paintings and 30 drawings presents a rich selection of works spanning 300 years of Italian art, from the early sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. The exhibition is organised by Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid in NGV’s exciting new Ancient World gallery showcases works from ancient Egypt, the Near East, Greece, Italy and Mesoamerica. Situated on Level 2 of NGV International, in the heart of the Gallery’s permanent collections, the collections are displayed across three areas, encompassing Mesoamerica, The Classical World and Egypt and the Near East. The two corridor cases that flank the gallery feature representative tomb groups from West Mexico and ancient Eg From Paris with Love: The Graphic Arts in France 1880s–1950s presents an array of prints, posters, drawings and artists’ books drawn from the NGV Collection. The exhibition is particularly strong in prints, reflecting the remarkable boom in printmaking that occurred in France during this period, and especially in the 1890
