NGV Summer Sundays: free music at the NGV throughout February
The NGV and Mushroom are collaborating for the first time to present the NGV Summer Sundays. The garden at NGV International will play host to a free outdoor music festival every Sunday throughout February, with Mushroom’s Melbourne born and raised bands and DJs taking the stage including sultry singer-songwriter Lanie Lane, indie band Husky, pop outfit Alpine and electro-dance group World’s End Press, amongst many others.
Each Sunday in February, enjoy free performances from some of Australia’s finest musicians while relaxing under the shade of tents adorned with artwork of one of the country’s most irreverent, outspoken and recognisable brands, Mambo, at the NGV International, Grollo Equiset Garden.
The festival includes a variety of DJ and band performances each week. Other artists in the line-up include singer-songwriter Melody Pool, lo-fi duo Slum Sociable, Brisbane-based four piece The Creases and Kagu (Sean Heathcliff formerly of Snakadaktal), as well as sets from I Oh You DJs, Clubfeet DJs, British India DJs and Mushroom DJs.
To add to the summer festival vibe, burgers from cult burger joint Huxtaburger and drinks from local microbreweries will be on offer.
NGV director Tony Ellwood said, ‘We are pleased to be able to support young and upcoming local musicians and to have the opportunity to work with Mushroom to bring more music into our spaces. The music will complement our contemporary summer exhibitions and I look forward to welcoming visitors to the Summer Sundays at the NGV.’
Chairman of the Mushroom Group Michael Gudinski said, ‘I’m very excited about our partnership with the NGV to curate the entertainment for the NGV Summer Sundays. It’s a fantastic initiative to showcase homegrown Australian artists in a creative hub such as the NGV, and I’m looking forward to kicking back with a beer and a burger in The Garden come February.’
Visitors can also enjoy the NGV’s extensive line-up of summer exhibitions at NGV International The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier, Express Yourself: Romance Was Born for Kids and David Shrigley: Life and Life Drawing and Takahiro Iwasaki’s Itsukushima Reflection Model, as well as the permanent collection.
