Instrumental music is often an abstract and uncustomary medium through which to portray life stories or personality. The rich collection of Australian portraits on display for WHO ARE YOU: Australian Portraiture compliments a program of diverse music for solo horn, wind quintet and marimba, selected and performed by ANAM horn player, Nicola Robinson, with ANAM musicians.
The program evokes a musical representation of a portrait gallery and the treasures within, whilst also creating a portrait of the curator. Each work in the program is by an Australian composer. Nicola says:
“I have endeavoured to include works that are in themselves portraits, that depict an element of the performer or composer’s personality or a significant life event. This reflects the way in which portraiture can tell a story about the artist’s or subject’s life and work.”
