Travel back in time to ancient Egypt with NGV Educators and a real-life archaeologist! Inspired by the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces® exhibition Pharaoh, this is your chance to embark on a virtual journey with your students and bring an archaeological dig into the classroom. Hear stories about what life is like on an excavation, learn about the astonishing discoveries that are made and get a sneak peek of the ancient artefacts on display in Pharaoh. Through lively discussion and engaging activities, students will discover how these objects offer us a unique window into the lives and afterlives of people from the past.

Students will:

  • Identify key responsibilities of archaeologists and their role in contributing to the preservation and understanding of history
  • Use historical objects from Pharaoh to investigate significant beliefs associated with death and funerary customs and daily life
  • Assess the ways powerful figures in history have chosen to be portrayed in primary sources and consider the purpose of this
