Celebrating the opening weekend of Cats & Dogs, NGV curators reflect on the process of researching the NGV Collection to uncover the stories of our beloved feline and canine companions, and discuss our enduring relationship with these animals across history and cultures, which has inspired artists and designers for over a millenia.

Featuring allegorical emblems and modern masterpieces, the exhibition features over 250 works of art and design depicting loyal dogs and spirited cats selected from the National Gallery of Victoria’s Collection. Whether you’re a dog lover or a cat person, these works reveal how deeply embedded our favourite animals are, not only in our lives but also within the history of art and design.
