Level 2

Join NGV Curators Michael Gentle and Sophie Gerhard as they guide visitors on a journey through NGV’s Australian art collection.

Traditionally the Australian Art Galleries at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia have opened with the story of British arrival. Recently the Collection has been reimagined with the inclusion of historical and contemporary First Nations art in each Gallery space, commemorating 65,000 years of continued First Nations artistic and cultural practice.

In this this tour gain a fresh perspective on Australian art as the Curator’s delve into the Australian Art Collection through the lens of colonisation and First Peoples perspectives. Together, the curators will shine a light on the longer histories behind some of Australia’s most beloved artworks, situating them within the rich and complex stories that make up this country.

Sophie Gerhard is Curator of Australian and First Nations Art, NGV
