LAUNCH: Sat 17 Mar, 4–6pm
Sophie Gannon Gallery presents the first series of Design Research Division (DRD) projects by Studio Chen Lu. The works inhabit an inner-suburban Melbourne home, where rooms are transformed into a series of meditation spaces. Each space encourages viewers to slow down and immerse in the environments. Lu explores the possibility of meditative forms in which objects or images are ‘empty’ of meaning and function.
Lu’s objects are flattened ‘paper-thin’, reducing the objects into a surface on the wall. These ‘flat forms’ take on the tradition of decorative wall paper and wall painting, bridging the practice between decorative art, design objects and fine art. Similar to optical illusions sparking curiosity and creativity, these ‘flat-forms’ are mediums of active meditation.
