Have you always wanted to learn to draw? Or are you looking to further develop your drawing skills?

Spend Saturday mornings in the NGV galleries and learning studios in this four week technical course guided by artist Lily Mae Martin.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Lily Mae Martin is an award-winning Melbourne-based artist whose practice is based primarily in drawing. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in drawing from the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA). Upon graduating in 2008 Lily Mae was awarded the Lionell Gell travelling scholarship which enabled her to travel to Europe. From there she resided in Berlin, Germany and then Cardiff, Wales for a number of years refining her drawing practice and exhibiting her work.

Since returning to Australia, Lily Mae has continued to exhibit her work and has been teaching drawing to all abilities. She was the winner of the 2016 Ursula Hoff Institute Emerging Artist Acquisitive Art Award in the National Works on Paper exhibition, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery and a finalist for the 2016 Rick Amor Drawing Prize, Art Gallery of Ballarat. She has also been shortlisted for the 2016 Paul Guest Drawing Prize, Bendigo Art Gallery, Adelaide Perry drawing prize 2017 and the Dobell Drawing Prize 2019. Lily Mae is represented by Scott Livesey Galleries in Naarm, Melbourne.

WHEN IS THIS COURSE?

The course will take place weekly on Saturday mornings from 15 March – 5 April. Classes will run from 9am–11.30am.

Includes tea and coffee on arrival in the NGV Members Lounge and exclusive access to the Gallery before it opens to the public at 10am.

WHAT WILL THE COURSE INVOLVE?

This practical course introduces the fundamentals of observational drawing and mark making, taking inspiration from artworks in the NGV Collection.

Across four weeks and with exclusive access to the Gallery before hours, award-winning artist Lily Mae Martin guides participants through engaging activities and exercises to develop drawing skills, providing tailored one-on-one feedback along the way. Through this, participants will build their visual language to create their own unique artworks.

Materials provided. Suitable for all skill levels, no prior experience necessary.
