A selection of works from the mid-1980s-2010s by three leading designers – Martin Margiela, Jean Paul Gaultier and John Galliano – comprise a new display at NGV International.

Join NGV Curatorial Project Officer Charlotte Botica as she discusses these three designers’ enduring influence on fashion practice, and their relationship to one another.

Mentored in his early career by Jean Paul Gaultier, a tour de force of French fashion, Belgian designer Martin Margiela named British designer John Galliano as his successor in 2014.Galliano now continues the legacies of Maison Martin Margiela, while enmeshing the house codes with his own design sensibility.

Works by Jean Paul Gaultier showcase the designer’s deliberate exercises in bad taste and mastery of kitsch and camp that culminate his formidable imprint and influence on Parisian fashion while Maison Martin Margiela house design codes of re/deconstruction, anonymity and reimagining of materials and fashion history are evidenced in works across 1989-2015 collections. John Galliano’s Creative Directorship’s at his eponymous label, Givenchy, and at Maison Martin Margiela, highlight the designer’s technical prowess for tailoring and bias-cutting, and his kaleidoscopic blending of historical periods, figures, silhouettes, and literature.

Experience these works up close and learn about three of the most influential designers of the twentieth century.
