Celebrating the opening of Another Other: The Photo-Politics of Gary Lee at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Larrakia artist Gary Lee, writer and curator Maurice O’Riordan, and NGV Curator of Australian and First Nations Art Michael Gentle, look back through the lens of Lee’s many decades of portraiture in an intimate conversation exploring themes of masculinity, Indigeneity, and beauty.

Another Other, opening on 5 April, is the largest ever public gallery display of Gary’s work, with 42 of his pieces entering the NGV Collection.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Gary Lee is an award-winning Larrakia artist from Darwin who has worked as a visual artist, fashion designer, playwright, curator and writer. As a visual artist he has mainly produced photo media-based work which celebrates and challenges notions of masculinity, ethnicity and beauty and which also mines the colonial archive particularly as it relates to Larrakia history. He won the Works on Paper Award at the 2022 Telstra NATSIAAs and his publication Heat: Gary Lee, selected texts, art & anthropology (2023) won Best Art Writing by an Indigenous Writer at the 2024 Arts Writing and Publishing Awards (AAANZ).

Maurice O’Riordan is a curator, writer and publisher. He is a former editor of Art Monthly Australasia and a former director of the Northern Centre for Contemporary Art, Darwin. He currently works at Batchelor Institute as a curator and publisher. In 2023 he founded dishevel books, an independent publisher of art-related books. His latest book is Candid enigma: the artful adventures of Andrew Hau Ewing (2025) and his latest curatorial project is Queer Territory, a survey of queer contemporary practice in the NT (Northern Centre for Contemporary, May-July 2025).
