Described by The New Yorker as a ‘virtuoso of colour’ and ‘possessor of perfect chromatic pitch’, award-winning architect and designer India Mahdavi is renowned for her singular approach to colour and texture in interior design. Established in 2000, her Paris-based studio is known for the diversity of its international projects, which explore the fields of architecture, interior design, scenography, furniture and object design.
From The Gallery at Sketch, London, to the Cavallino restaurant she designed for Ferrari in Maranello, or the Hôtel du Cloître in Arles, Mahdavi’s achievements in interior design are renowned. She has been named in Architectural Digest’s Hall of Fame since 2019, won Frame Magazine’s 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award and was recognised as the 2023 Designer of the Year by Wallpaper.
For Pierre Bonnard: Designed by India Mahdavi, the NGV invited Mahdavi to develop the exhibition’s unique and immersive scenography. Encountering Bonnard’s work anew, Mahdavi has created, in her own words, ‘an impression of his world, through my own eyes’.
In Melbourne to celebrate the opening of the exhibition, Mahdavi speaks with NGV curator Dr Miranda Wallace in an intimate conversation. Mahdavi will reflect on seminal projects she has worked on, offering unique insight into her design process and her experience working on the Pierre Bonnard exhibition.
