Ground Level

Commemorating the inaugural display of Iwantja Inma – Song, Dance, Ceremony, the first ever recording of this traditional performance, artists and Community members from Indulkana will perform inma: traditional ceremonial song and dance live at NGV.

An important and elaborate part of community life in Indulkana which involves story-telling, language, body paint, music and movement, this inma, on display in Wurrdha Marra from 15 June, was initiated by senior artists Kunmanara (Peter) Mungkuri, Alec Baker and Hughie Cullinan, and is the first-ever recording and display of these traditions for a gallery context.

The work imbues the pride, resilience and joy of Yankuntjatjara culture, and celebrates the inma and the community of Indulkana as alive and ongoing. This is an incredibly rare opportunity to see Community members across multiple generations perform and celebrate Culture in person, alongside this seminal video work.
