Levels 3-6

Let’s get creative and learn about Japanese culture through art. Be inspired by the NGV’s collection of Japanese art and join artist Junko Azukawa in the NGV Learn studio for a sumi-e (ink wash painting) workshop.

This enriching session includes educator-led language activities and an introduction to the NGV collection of Japanese art, followed by a workshop with Junko Azukawa. The program will be delivered primarily in English and is suitable for Japanese learners of all levels.

Duration: 2 hours

Learning Objectives

  • Identify and discuss how ideas are expressed in Japanese artworks in the NGV Collection and make connections with their understanding of Japanese language, history and culture
  • Practice simple Japanese phrases and vocabulary in context to respond to artworks
  • Create a sumi-e (ink wash painting) guided by artist Junko Azukawa

This program is part of Creative Catalyst, a program for high ability students attending Victorian Government schools.
