Since they began collaborating in 1995, Danish and Norwegian pair Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset (Elmgreen and Dragset) have challenged and reshaped the way in which art is presented and experienced through playfully and disarmingly amalgaming sculpture, painting and objects. Live at NGV International, Berlin-based Michael Elmgreen will speak with NGV Senior Curator Myles Russell-Cook about the process of creating the works, the duo’s interest in the relationship between art, artist and audience, and their investigations into social, cultural and political structures.

About the speakers:

Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset have worked together as an artist duo since 1995. Based in Berlin, Elmgreen & Dragset pursue questions of identity and belonging and investigate social, cultural, and political structures in their artistic practice. They are interested in the discourse that can arise if objects are radically re-contextualized and if normal modes for the representation of art are altered. Elmgreen & Dragset have held numerous solo exhibitions at art institutions worldwide, including EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Finland (2020); The Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas (2019-20); The Whitechapel Gallery, London (2018–19); Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Tel Aviv and more.

Myles Russell-Cook is Senior Curator of Australian and First Nations Art at the National Gallery of Victoria. Myles has a long standing interest in cultural, gender and sexual diversity within both Australian and International contemporary practice, and has worked across a broad range of exhibitions and projects. Myles is one of a team of curators who collectively oversee major contemporary art exhibitions including NGV Triennial, and Melbourne Now.
