Underpinning the work of British conceptual artist Ryan Gander RA OBE is an interest in serendipity and storytelling. His works are reminiscent of a puzzle or pick-a-path story, and encourage audiences to make their own connections or invent their own narratives.

The end, 2020, is the final work in Gander’s trilogy of prophetic, animatronic mice sculptures voiced by his young daughter. Emerging from a hole in the wall to philosophise on some of the biggest questions that face humanity, The end is representative of Gander’s canny ability to connect the everyday and the esoteric in playful yet meaningful ways.

Before seeing Gander’s work, hear the artist speak with NGV Senior Curator Ewan McEoin in an after-hours conversation at NGV about his career and his artistic motivations, and how he hopes audiences will respond to this latest work in the NGV Collection.

This event will be presented in person and livestreamed. When registering, you can choose to book an in-person ticket or a virtual ticket to access the livestream.

About the speakers:

Ryan Gander has established an international reputation through artworks that materialise in many different forms – from sculpture to film, writing, graphic design, installation and performance. In 2017 he was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for services to contemporary art. Through connecting the everyday and the esoteric, the overlooked and the commonplace, Gander’s work involves a questioning of language and knowledge, as well as a reinvention of both the modes of appearance and the creation of an artwork. Gander studied at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK; the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, and the Jan van Eyck Akademie, Maastricht, Netherlands. He has been a Professor of Visual Art at the University of Huddersfield and holds an honorary Doctor of the Arts at the Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Suffolk

Amita Kirpalani is Curator of Contemporary Art, at the National Gallery of Victoria.
