ABOUT MUSIC IN EXILE
Music in Exile is a not-for-profit record label, artist services organisation and registered Australian charity that works to increase access to resources and build professional networks for culturally and linguistically diverse artists in the music industry. They operate on an ‘artist first’ principle, ensuring that individual artists have ownership over the tools and resources necessary to build lasting careers in the arts. In doing so, Music in Exile hopes to build an arts sector that is equitable and accessible for all, and that truly reflects the myriad viewpoints and experiences to be found in Australian society.

4 OCTOBER: KANG JJ
Kang John Jock, professionally known by his stage name as Kang JJ, is a South Sudanese singer, songwriter, poet and activist. Born in 1980, Kang inherited the gift of singing from his father, who performed at local weddings and religious ceremonies in regional South Sudan.

Growing up in a musical family, Kang quickly turned to performing and in 2012 was awarded ‘Afrobreat Entertainer of the Year’ at the South Sudan Music Awards. Recently migrating to Australia, Kang hopes to use his talent to advocate for peace and unity in South Sudan, a region plagued by ongoing internal conflict. He has collaborated with local artists including Karate Boogaloo and is a mainstay on the South Sudanese wedding and community circuit.

EXHIBITION

A ticket to NGV Friday Nights is your only opportunity to come face-to-face with ancient Egypt’s divine icons and invincible warriors at night. Melbourne Winter Masterpieces®: Pharaoh, traverses three thousand years of art and culture and more than 500 objects, including monumental sculpture, architecture, temples, jewellery, coffins and more. This exhibition celebrates the phenomenon of pharaoh, those all-powerful kings claiming a divine origin.
