ABOUT MUSIC IN EXILE
Music in Exile is a not-for-profit record label, artist services organisation and registered Australian charity that works to increase access to resources and build professional networks for culturally and linguistically diverse artists in the music industry. They operate on an ‘artist first’ principle, ensuring that individual artists have ownership over the tools and resources necessary to build lasting careers in the arts. In doing so, Music in Exile hopes to build an arts sector that is equitable and accessible for all, and that truly reflects the myriad viewpoints and experiences to be found in Australian society.
4 OCTOBER: JARABI BAND
Jarabi Band leads audiences on a dynamic journey from the ancient Manding Empire of West Africa to modern-day city life, weaving the timeless musical traditions of Guinea with contemporary sounds of Melbourne’s vivid music scene.
Led by visionary master musician Mohamed Camara, Jarabi crafts a unique fusion of infectious rhythms, intricate melodies and soul-stirring vocals, delivering an exciting sound which transcends cultural barriers and speaks a universal language, unifying people from diverse backgrounds.
Jarabi Band’s debut album Duniama – In This World (2023, Music in Exile, with support from Creative Victoria) includes lead single Djamana, which placed in the top 10 finalists for 2024’s Needle in the Hay competition. In 2024, Jarabi Band’s national album launch tour (delivered with support from Creative Australia) intoxicated audiences at some of the country’s most revered venues and events, including Melbourne Recital Centre, Port Fairy Folk Festival, Dark Mofo, Mona Foma, Illawarra Folk Festival and the High Country Hop. Jarabi Band have recently received a nomination in the 2024 Music Victoria Awards.
Driven by a deep desire to share Guinea’s music and culture with the world, Mohamed has assembled a group of exceptionally talented musicians who share his vision. Together, Jarabi create a musical experience that ignites the stage and fills the dance floor!

A ticket to NGV Friday Nights is your only opportunity to come face-to-face with ancient Egypt’s divine icons and invincible warriors at night. Melbourne Winter Masterpieces®: Pharaoh, traverses three thousand years of art and culture and more than 500 objects, including monumental sculpture, architecture, temples, jewellery, coffins and more. This exhibition celebrates the phenomenon of pharaoh, those all-powerful kings claiming a divine origin.
