GREAT HALL

Tempo Rubato has curated four nights of music as part of NGV’s Pharaoh Friday Nights season. Come and hear some of our country’s most highly skilled artists create a spectrum of soundworlds with wood, metal, friction and air, on instruments that have been evolving for hundreds of years. Plus maybe the odd synthesiser.

ABOUT TEMPO RUBATO
Tempo Rubato is a music venue tucked away in a repurposed warehouse on Breese Street, Brunswick. The venue’s stripped back aesthetic and considered approach to curation draws a diverse and broadminded audience of locals, artists and music fans from across Melbourne each week. With a focus on classical music, Tempo Rubato also stretches to ambient, electronic, improvisation and singer-songwriters.

13 SEPTEMBER: AFFINITY QUARTET
Affinity Quartet appeared on Melbourne’s classical music scene in 2015 as ‘one of the most exciting ensembles to make their mark.’ (Classic Melbourne). Featuring violinists Josephine Chung and Nicholas Waters, violist Ruby Shirres and cellist Mee Na Lojewski, the group has won major prizes in four international string quartet competitions. They have been living in Madrid for much of 2024, receiving guidance from Günter Pichler, founder and first violinist of one of the most famous quartets of all time, the Alban Berg Quartet.

EXHIBITION

A ticket to NGV Friday Nights is your only opportunity to come face-to-face with ancient Egypt’s divine icons and invincible warriors at night. Melbourne Winter Masterpieces®: Pharaoh, traverses three thousand years of art and culture and more than 500 objects, including monumental sculpture, architecture, temples, jewellery, coffins and more. This exhibition celebrates the phenomenon of pharaoh, those all-powerful kings claiming a divine origin.
