PERFORMANCES
Surprise Chef
Great Hall
7.30pm – 8.30pm
Surprise Chef are Melbourne’s cinematic soul journeymen, pushing vivid shades of instrumental jazz-funk with a DIY mentality. The centrepiece of their self-run College Of Knowledge Records roster, Surprise Chef’s output reflects a meticulous education of 1970’s soul, touching on the legacies of composer/producers David Axelrod & Isaac Hayes, with cues also taken from the catalogues of Daptone and Truth & Soul. Surprise Chef’s live show is an odyssey through dark landscapes of analogue synth-laden funk and left-field library music-esque scenes; a flowing, linear puzzle of vivid minor-key expressions.
College of Knowledge
Great Hall
6.00pm – 7.30pm
8.30pm – 10.00pm
The partnership of Lachlan Stuckey (AKA Fairbanks) and Jethro Curtin delves into numerous musical spheres; as DJs pushing the soulful side of record racks; as composers and performers of funk, soul and jazz; and as record label partners, releasing crusty instrumental music out of their analogue-focused home studio. Fairbanks & Jethro’s DJ sets are a reflection of a strong musical bond and deep friendship, enthusiastically and intuitively navigating old sounds from a new perspective. These sets trace the uplifting modern soul cuts, wild jazz-funk explorations, and thumping disco heavers that fill their shared crates.
