Join us for a three-day fashion intensive program with local contemporary artist and fashion designer Chelsea Hickman. Inspired by the NGV’s major summer exhibition, Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos, Muse, this program features:

  • Hands-on workshops guided by Chelsea Hickman’s extraordinary talent in fashion design and her knowledge of McQueen. Create a McQueen-inspired garment, from concept development to final product, learning fashion techniques and skills along the way.
  • An opportunity to stage and document your garment working with a professional photographer from the NGV.
  • An introductory talk by NGV Curator of Fashion and Textiles, Danielle Whitfield, followed by a viewing of Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos, Muse.

No prerequisite skills required. Just a passion for fashion!
All materials supplied.

Cost: $240 per student

Learning Objectives:

    • Identify and discuss the practises, materiality, techniques, technologies and processes of Alexander McQueen.
    • Analyse, interpret and discuss themes and concepts in Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos, Muse.
    • Conceptualise, design and create works of art and design, which express meaning and ideas connected to Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos, Muse and the NGV’s Collection.
    • Manipulate materials, techniques and processes to create two-dimensional and three-dimensional works.
    • Develop a personal style and take inspiration for your own art and design practice.

Artist bio:
Chelsea Hickman is a contemporary artist and fashion designer from lutruwita/Tasmania, currently based in Naarm/Melbourne on Wurundjeri County. Her work focuses on abject consumerism, found objects and the utilisation of textile waste as her primary source of materials. In 2020, she was the Open Category Winner of the ‘Woods Street Youth Art Prize’ for her textile artwork Danger Danger Danger Danger Danger. In 2021, she was the winner of the ‘Creative Call Out’ for the Melbourne Fashion Festival. In 2022, she was the recipient of the Victorian Premier’s Design Award ‘Best in Category’ for Fashion Design.
