To understand the present, we need to look at the past.
From the ancient terracotta warriors, the guardians of immortality, to contemporary art of today, this seminar will trace the history of Chinese art and explore how the hidden meanings and symbolism in traditional Chinese art are still used today.
The morning program will feature a special guest appearance with one of the world’s most exciting contemporary artists, Cai Guo-Qiang. In a Q&A with the audience, Cai will reveal why and how he creates his explosive performance art, gunpowder paintings and installations.
Art experts include Professor Tonia Eckfeld, University of Melbourne, one of the first Western women allowed entry to the excavation site of the terracotta warriors in China’s ancient Xi’an, Shaanxi province; and senior curators from the NGV.
